Description


The Student Success Center (SSC) at Loyola University New Orleans is looking for an Advisor / Success Coach to deliver personalized, constructive, engaging, motivating, and informative advising/coaching sessions to a caseload of approximately 200-250 undergraduate students. This person will guide undergraduate students through advising and coaching issues such as course and program selection, academic regulations and procedures, identifying campus support resources, cultivating good study habits, identifying opportunities for community and campus engagement, and ensuring student confidence in their own financial wellness. This person will be trained as a success coach to empower students to identify goals, develop plans, and build motivation. This is a unique opportunity to help retention efforts at Loyola and to be part of a robust student-centered experience using proven models for student success.


In addition, this person may also assist with other programs such as our mentoring program for first generation students, exploratory studies, Student Success workshops, and other retention-focused initiatives. This position is part of a dynamic, student-centric team that supports undergraduate students. The Advisor / Success Coach will interact with the SSC staff and reports to the Director of Advising and Coaching.

Examples of Duties


  • Build trusting relationships with a diverse student population by delivering personalized, constructive, engaging, motivating, and informative advising/coaching sessions to a caseload of approximately 200-250 undergraduate students.
  • Contact all assigned students. Monitor academic, career and personal goals, interests, and needs of students and provide individual guidance and referrals to campus resources as appropriate.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation, including student performance and outcomes. Be able to prioritize and execute appropriate advising and coaching actions to remove roadblocks to success.
  • Attend monthly training sessions, collaborate with trained success coach trainers as needed, and earn certification as a Success Coach within the first years of employment.
  • Help manage data to identify students at risk, communicate with student cohorts about advising and coaching initiatives, and provide assessments for retention efforts. Compile and prepare reports based on retention targets.
  • Develop workshops to teach academic success skills to compliment coaching efforts. Schedule, advertise, and track Student Success Workshops.
  • Build rapport with undergraduate students, colleagues, and representatives from campus partners. Make referrals when necessary.
  • Achieve mastery of the technology platforms used in advising and coaching, including our Student Information Systems (SIS) and Loyola Online Records Access (LORA), Loynotes (our early warning and record-keeping software) and UAchieve / Planner (our platform for four-year academic planning and tracking progress toward graduation).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Typical Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred
  • Experience advising, coaching, mentoring, or counseling preferred.
  • Experience with undergraduate students in a higher education strongly preferred.
  • Teaching experience preferred.
  • Eagerness to learn and implement student-centered advising and coaching techniques to enable students to direct their academic and personal goals.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, and technical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as both a team member and as a leader.
  • Ability to develop and execute programs and events.
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of faculty, administrators, students, alumni and staff.
  • Be sensitive to the needs of a diverse student body.
  • Availability on some evenings and weekends as required.
