The Bilingual Museum Educator is responsible for designing and delivering engaging, hands-on STEAM educational experiences in both English and Spanish. STEAM programs include, but are not limited to, daily guest interactions, museum educational events, and summer library and in-school outreach initiatives. This role involves program development (e.g., curriculum writing), translating educational materials into Spanish (e.g., parent letters, museum signs, activities), and engaging diverse audiences in scientific thinking and the engineering design process.

Additional responsibilities could include translating and developing materials for tinkering initiatives and workshops, building relationships with community organizations, and supporting other educational programs that advance Science Museum Oklahoma’s mission to provide discovery-based learning experiences to children, families, and educators.

  • Design, implement, and facilitate inquiry-based, STEAM learning activities in both English and Spanish
  • Translate educational materials into Spanish to ensure accessibility for Spanish-speaking guests
  • Ensure materials for hands-on programs align with the museum’s mission and best practices for emerging multilingual language (EML) development, and formal and informal education
  • Maintain scientific accuracy and educational integrity of all programming information
  • Stay current with trends in STEM education, makerspace/tinkering programming, and emerging multilingual language development to incorporate innovative ideas and teaching practices
  • Adapt programming to meet the needs of diverse audiences, providing differentiation as needed
  • Collaborate with colleagues, volunteers, and other museum departments to align efforts with broader organizational goals and initiatives
  • Coordinate with the Audience Engagement Specialist to ensure Spanish-English programming is included in the monthly daily activities schedule
  • Assist with training colleagues and volunteers to facilitate science demonstrations and hands-on activities in English and Spanish
  • Collect feedback from guests and analyze program outcomes to continuously improve the effectiveness of learning experiences
  • Support additional museum initiatives as assigned to spark curiosity and promote discovery learning experiences

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Fluency in both spoken and written Spanish and English
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, museum studies, or a relevant STEM discipline (e.g., science, engineering, technology, math)
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license and provide proof of insurance as position requires travel

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) or more years of experience developing and translating STEM education curricula into another language
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive teaching practices and experience serving Spanish-speaking communities

Availability Requirements

  • Ability to work two (2) Saturdays a month
  • Ability to work evenings and holidays, as needed
  • Flexibility to travel for outreach efforts across the state, as needed

  • Strong background in STEM education, particularly hands-on, inquiry-based learning approaches.
  • Excellent communication skills, including proficient writing and editing abilities.
  • Approachable, kind, and confident demeanor, with a willingness to receive and implement feedback.
  • Independent and proactive work ethic, with the ability to identify and complete tasks with minimal direction, while also thriving in a cooperative team environment.
  • Practical understanding of safety protocols and best practices for conducting science demonstrations.

Working Conditions

This position works in an active and busy children’s museum setting.

  • Work involves frequent sitting, standing and walking for long periods of time.
  • Work involves crawling, climbing and crouching
  • Work may include occasional pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying objects weighing up to 40 pounds.

This position may require the employee to drive for business purposes in either their own vehicle or a vehicle provided by SMO. Employees that drive for business purposes must be able to pass a Motor Vehicle Records check, and provide proof of insurance and a valid license to drive on an annual basis.
